According to wikipedia there are molecular mechanisms within copper that can control a wide range of molds, algae, fungi, and microbes. We've been cutting off new tomato flowers to divert energy to fruit and I thought it might be a good time to try an old wives tale I heard down at the hardware store a few years ago. If it slows down the blight even a little it'll be worth the effort. Jami We'll be sure to post a followup. I suspect this penny trick would be most effective if used early in the season before blight hits the patch. Wilder Family Excellent point! Mark should probably go digging for an older penny I didn't realize modern pennies had no copper at all in them. Copper is a well-known biocide, and was used as such even before the concept of bacteria and viruses was known. But is is not just copper. Its alloys can have the same antimicrobial propertiesbut to a somewhat lesser degree. What is really cool is that copper also works well against some viruses and fungi. If you can't find copper pennies, use red copper water pipe. I'm not sure how common that is in the US; here most houses have copper freshwater pipes. Based on this, I had another idea to protect your tomatoes; IIRC, you seem to have observed that the lower leaves are blighted first. To protect your tomato plants after you've tied them up I propose you put some fine copper -plated mesh around the plant, parallel to the ground, a couple of inches up. The mesh should intercept dust particles as the rain splashes them up, while the copper wreaks havoc on bacteria and possibly spores that touch it. It also keeps the leaves off the ground. Roland Great ideas, as usual. By the way, I did a few seconds of research and found out that even modern pennies have a very thin coating of copper, which I'll bet is sufficient for the use Mark is putting them to. And I think we have some copper water pipe in the barn, too. I wonder if it would work to have a circle of copper-plated mesh on little feet that you put a few inches above the mulch? I like your idea of focusing on the real problem, which is splashing up from the ground. I don't want to put the copper directly on the ground, though, because it could kill the important soil microorganisms. I'll bet there's a microbusiness product there if anyone wanted to test it out Angela Yep, that's what I eventually learned after I did some research. Lots of fascinating information out there on the internet about copper content of pennies! Anonymous Spraying on copper is the mainstream "organic" way to prevent blight, but it's a very strong treatment that I don't really approve of. The copper ends up in the soil, where it kills essential soil microorganisms and can also build up to problematic levels for plants after a few years. That's why we work around the blight rather than spraying copper. Although I'm not so sure Mark's technique will do any good, it will also have the benefit of doing no evil since the copper is unlikely to end up in the soil in more than miniscule quantities. Since metallic copper does not dissolve in water, I don't think placing copper mesh directly onto the ground will do much harm as opposed to the soluble copper II compounds that are usually sprayed on plants. This should put the copper mesh 2" above ground. You could even fill the space under this contraption with straw as an extra mulch to keep the competition out. Hmm, I can't seem to find a composition for the stuf-fit, other than that it of composed out of "various metals". And it looks like its braided rather than woven, so it might come apart when you cut it open to lay it flat. Presumably to keep it from oxidizing quickly.

Green tomatoes seem to be particularly prolific this year. The warm Spring seems to have got the tomato population off to a great start, but the subsequent less than glorious summer has resulted in fewer than usual ripening into luscious red tomatoes. Many people I know have more green tomatoes than they know what to do with. If you are over-run with green tomatoes, try this easy pasta sauce recipe — it tastes very much like sun-dried tomatoes — great with olives and cheese. This is when you not only need to be a gardener, but an inventive and creative cook. There is always green tomato chutney — like Apple Chutney, it is actually quite quick and easy to make. However, I may well be grateful for it in months to come — all this chutney can make great Christmas gifts! There will be so much more on the topic of Christmas in the next few weeks! So what else can you do with green tomatoes other than make chutney? There are ways you can try to ripen your green tomatoes. They will not taste quite as good as ones that have naturally ripened on the vine, but they will at least be good for cooking and putting with other things. The problem with green tomatoes is that they are fairly astringent and a little sharp — so they need something to bring out sweetness and flavour. Roasting certainly does it for many vegetables — so I thought it was worth a try with green tomatoes. So this recipe is based on roasted green tomatoes served with olives and cheese. I did put the odd ripe tomato in with the green ones as I had read that the red tomatoes help to bring out the flavour of the green tomatoes. Next time I will try adding peppers and onions to the mix as well as some garlic — all of which should help to bring out the sweetness. In my opinion this pasta sauce tasted somewhat akin to sundried tomatoes — but perhaps not quite such a deep rich flavour. I am looking forward to seeing what others think and what variations people might make to the recipe. Print Recipe Cooking Directions. For many, drying is the most important process in cannabis cultivation. They are not without reason. The way you carry out this last step will decide the good or bad quality of your crop, even if you have spent weeks taking good care of the plants. The key is to be patient. Growing marijuana is an exciting process for weed lovers. First, you have to fertilize the plants. Then you have to water them often and stay alert to the needs of the strain at all times. In order to enjoy our cultivation, we have to carry out the probably most critical step of the whole process. During this process, if the techniques are appropriate, the potency and flavour of the herb can be preserved and increased. However, an error in drying can ruin the best quality crops. Therefore, do not be in a hurry. The best thing is to be patient and let things run their course. Usually, a good drying needs 10 to 15 days to be completed successfully. The most advisable option is to get rid of as much humidity as possible during the first three days and then slow down the process a bit. In order to obtain good quality marijuana, it is important that during the first three days of drying, a temperature around 20 degrees Celsius is maintained. In this way, the buds will dry quickly but without reaching dangerous speeds. After this period of time, the temperature should be reduced by a couple of degrees. With regard to ventilation, an electric oscillating fan is a good option to control temperature and humidity, but do not focus the appliance directly on the buds, because this will cause them to dry unevenly. Finally, it is important that the room where the drying takes place is dark, as sunlight degrades the THC in cannabis. Once you know the requirements for successful drying, it is time to become familiar with the two main methods of removing excess water from plants. For large harvests, net drying is recommended, which saves a lot of space. This process involves placing the buds on several tiers or nets, depending on their size or cutting time. Whenever we work with buds we must avoid them touching each other, with the intention of facilitating the drying process. The second and most widespread technique is that of stringing, which is usually used for outdoor crops, as the size of the branches is larger. This method consists of hanging the buds upside down on a rope, just as we would do with wet clothes. The only drawback is that it takes up more space than a net, but it can be done on a terrace or in the garden of the house without difficulty. As with netting, it is important that the buds do not touch each other and that they are at a considerable distance from the ground to prevent them from getting dirty. Despite being a simple technique, the biggest problem with drying is that it is not suitable for the most impatient. Although it is advisable to let it take the necessary time, there are urgent occasions when one cannot wait. There are a number of techniques to advance the drying process, but you should also be aware that the result may not be the same. The first option is to manicure the buds and bring them closer to a radiator so that they get warm and end up drying. Another possibility is to put on an apron and turn on the oven: at a temperature of 65 degrees Celsius, your buds will be practically dry in a quarter of an hour. Another alternative is to cut the buds into small pieces and store them in a glass container with an airtight lid. Inside the container we will also introduce drying bags of silica gel, which will be in charge of absorbing the humidity of the marijuana in a few hours. The last option is to use a food dehydrator for one or two days. This device consists of a series of stackable racks where the buds are placed. A fan blows air through these grids upwards to dry the buds in a short time. With these tips, you are now ready to try out cannabis drying, a very easy technique that will make you enjoy the herb like a child in new shoes. Where and how to dry marijuana necks after harvest.
