Bass instrument

They belong to different families of instruments and can cover a wide range of musical roles. Since producing low pitches usually requires a long air column or string, and for stringed instruments, a large hollow body, the string and wind bass instruments are usually the largest instruments in their families or instrument classes. In musical compositions, such as songs and pieces, these are the lowest-pitched parts of the harmony. In choral music without instrumental accompaniment, the bass is supplied by adult male bass singers. For an accompanied choir, the bass is typically provided by pipe organ or piano or if a choir can afford to hire one, by orchestra. In an orchestra, the basslines are played by the double bass and cellosbassoon or contrabassoonlow brass such as the tuba and bass tromboneand the timpani kettledrums. In many styles of traditional music such as Bluegrassfolkand in styles such as Rockabilly and big band and Bebop jazzthe bass role is filled by the upright bass. In most rock and pop bands and in jazz fusion groups, the bass role is filled by the electric bass. In some 20th and 21st century pop genres, such as s pop, hip hop music and Electronic Dance Musicthe bass role may be filled with a bass synthesizer. When bass notes are played in a musical ensemble such an orchestrathey are frequently used to provide a counterpoint or counter- melodyin a harmonic context either to outline or juxtapose the progression of the chordsor with percussion to underline the rhythm. In popular music, the bass part, which is called the " bassline ", typically provides harmonic and rhythmic support to the band. The bass player is a member of the rhythm section in a band, along with the drummerrhythm guitaristand, in some cases, a keyboard instrument player e. The bass player emphasizes the root or fifth of the chord in their basslines and to a lesser degree, the third of the chord and accents the strong beats. Basso continuo was an approach to writing music during the Baroque music era With basso continuo, a written-out bassline served to set out the chord progression for an entire piece symphony, concerto, Mass, or other workwith the bassline being played by pipe organ or harpsichord and the chords being improvised by players of chordal instruments theorbo, lute, harpsichord, etc. It does so at levels ranging from immediate, chord-by-chord events to the larger harmonic organization of a entire work. As seen in the musical instrument classification article, categorizing instruments can be difficult. For example, some instruments fall into more than one category. The cello is considered a tenor instrument in some orchestral settings, but in a string quartet it is the bass instrument. Also, the Bass Flute is actually the tenor member of the flute family even though it is called the "Bass" Flute. A musician playing one of these instruments is often known as a bassist. Other more specific terms such as 'bass guitarist', 'double bassist', 'bass player', etc. In the early s, early disco DJs sought out deeper bass sounds for their dance events. David Mancuso hired sound engineer Alex Rosner [9] to design additional subwoofers for his disco dance events, along with "tweeter arrays" to "boost the treble and bass at opportune moments" at his private, underground parties at The Loft. By the end of the s, subwoofers were used in dance venue sound systems to enable the playing of "[b]ass-heavy dance music" that we "do not 'hear' with our ears but with our entire body". Deep, heavy bass is central to Jamaican musical styles such as dub and reggae. In Jamaica in the s and s, sound engineers for reggae sound systems began creating "heavily customized" subwoofer enclosures by adding foam and tuning the cabinets to achieve "rich and articulate speaker output below Hz". In Jamaican sound system culture, there are both "low and high bass bins" in "towering piles" that are "delivered in large trucks" and set up by a crew of "box boys", and then positioned and adjusted by the sound engineer in a process known as "stringing up", all to create the "sound of reggae music you can literally feel as it comes off these big speakers". The use of subwoofers to provide deep bass in film presentations received a great deal of publicity in with the movie Earthquake which was released in Sensurround. Initially installed in 17 U. Four of the subwoofers were positioned in front of the audience under or behind the film screen and two more were placed together at the rear of the audience on a platform. The new low frequency entertainment method helped the film become a box office success. More Sensurround systems were assembled and installed. By there were almost Sensurround systems leapfrogging through select theaters. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Tone of low frequency or range.

Fundraising Month is over! Check out a wrap-up and the promised hair cut video! Neighbor bass noise is bothering me. How to stop it? And how can I get it to stop? We have lived in our apartment in a prewar building for the past 6 years. It has been an oasis of quiet - I have never heard any of the neighbors, and we live on a quiet street facing away from the street. You can literally hear a pin drop. A few months ago, new neighbors moved in. We share a living room wall with these neighbors. They regularly play bass-heavy music, usually in the evenings typically pm, sometimes earlierbut never too late at night. Occasionally, on the weekend, they play it during the day. The bass is loud enough to be noticeable, and because it's bass, wearing headphones doesn't really help - I can still hear it even when listening to my own music or watching a movie with headphones on. The bass induces some kind of deep rage in me every time I hear it, and makes it difficult for me to concentrate or enjoy anything. Even when it's NOT playing, I'm tense in the back of my head because I know that it could start at any time. Is this just my life now? I get that people have a right to enjoy music in their own homes. But at the same time I don't think it's fair that their music should impact my peace and quiet. I don't think it's fair that there's basically no escape from it for me, short of leaving my house, since even headphones don't block it and I have to listen to their bass line over my music. If they disconnected their subwoofer, for example, they could still enjoy music albeit sans heavy bassbut it would be a significant improvement in my quality of life, The problem is that these things are so subjective.

T he night when the trouble with our neighbours started is a bit hazy because I was in the grips of a savage hangover. I turned to my girlfriend, hoping she would tell me it was just a car outside or my own pounding head exploding, but her grim nod confirmed the worst. A boy answered the door, while his mates peered out from behind him. He apologised before I could even say anything and turned it down. Over the next couple of months, our neighbours continued to play their music at all times of the day and night, at top volume, and with the bass was turned up as high as possible — meaning our flat vibrated to the tune of their rudeness and inconsiderateness. The first couple of times, the neighbours turned the music down at our request. But pretty soon they stopped answering the door. Then they began making as much noise as humanly possible on purpose. Combined with them smoking weed in our corridor and on our shared balcony, this made coming back to the flat an increasingly anxiety-ridden experience. I have never before described myself as an anxious person, but the threat of this unwelcome noise ate away at my nerves to the point where the sound of my girlfriend putting cutlery away or turning a page in a book set my teeth on edge. We started to stay with friends — not only to escape the neighbours, but to escape the anxiety that comes with not being able to relax in your own home. We called the non-emergency police number and the lady was so nice to me that I cried, but all she could do was log our incident and tell us to contact her if it happened again. I explained to our landlord how they would never find tenants as good as us until we set fire to our balcony — another story and that they needed to sort it out immediately. They got the council involved who were extremely helpful, worked very quickly and sent a couple of letters which seemed to do the trick, at least at first. Not that it mattered, because by that time we left shortly afterwards. Topics Cities You told us. Property Mental health Health comment. Reuse this content. Order by newest oldest recommendations.
